Safety For Children Around Dogs and Cats

Dr. Cornwell Presents Animal Safety Is Fun! To The Rotary Club of the Lowcountry In Beaufort, SC

Last Friday Dr. Cornwell spoke to the Rotary Club of the Lowcountry at the Beaufort Golden Corral. He was received by an audience of very friendly, helpful and kind Rotarians. He presented statistics and facts concerning the gravity of the public health concerns for dog and cat bites to children in America, South Carolina and Beaufort County, South Carolina. There are approximately 72 million good dogs, and 75 million good cats in America. But, any dog or cat can bite if threatened, scared or provoked. There are 5 million people bitten by dogs each year in the USA. 60-75% of those people bitten are children. In Beaufort County alone there were 430 investigations by Beaufort County and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) concerning dog and cat bite exposures. That’s way more than one a day just in Beaufort County, SC!

On a much lighter note Dr. Cornwell summarized by explaining how Animal Safety Is Fun! can help children and adults learn how to be safe around animals. Dr. Cornwell demonstrated two safety defensive maneuvers: “Be A Tree” and “Act Like A Log”, and then gave a few rules for safety around animals. Several Rotarians had excellent questions about Animal Safety Is Fun!

Dr. Cornwell’s goal is to educate every Beaufort County second grade student about Animal Safety Is Fun! so they can be safe and confident around animals. The good news is that most dog and cat bites are caused by humans misbehaving around animals. The dog bite epidemic is largely preventable through education and training of children at an early age. Animal Safety Is Fun! teaches kids how to “Respect Dogs and Cats” and behave in a way not to surprise, scare or threaten animals.
